Dr. Austin has been involved in bodybuilding off and on since 1985, when he was a senior in high school.
Unfortunately, in 1993 he suffered a severe low back injury while training at the gym. Dr. Austin currently 'practices what he preaches', however, by maintaining his spine with regular chiropractic adjustments (just like he recommends to his patients). In fact Dr. Austin has been getting his spine adjusted at least once a month since October 1998!
Dr Austin started exercising/training seriously again at the beginning of July 2000. At the present he lifts 3 or 4 days per week, walks and bicycles as often as he can (for aerobic / cardiovascular exercise) and eats a diet high in low glycemic complex carbohydrates, high in protein, and low in fat. His current diet also includes drinking plenty of water and taking the appropriate nutritional supplements (ie, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and specific amino acids). In December 1998, Dr. Austin drastically reduced the red meat and refined white sugar intake from his diet, and he continues to do so. He currently maintains a body fat percentage of approximately 11%.
One of Dr. Austin's goals is to stay as healthy as possible through proper nutrition, exercise, and regular chiropractic care, and to live a long, healthy life.
